We’ve posted about the different types of filaments that we sell, but did you know that it’s not only important to buy high quality filament, but it’s critical that you store it properly?
The Pinshape blog has some important tips on storing filament here, and we want to expand on their tips to avoid humidity destroying plastic filament.
Here in Dar es Salaam, relative humidity averages between 60-90% year round, with the rainy season months rarely dropping below 75%. This means that humidity is pretty much ALWAYS an issue and you need to take steps to protect your filament at all times.
Our tips for storing filament in humid conditions:
- First, ALWAYS remove your filament from the printer after use and store properly. Leaving your filament in the printer overnight is not a good idea.
- Find some 2 gallon (8 L) plastic sealing bags (like Ziploc) and place the filament in that, with the silica gel package that came with the filament (if possible).
- Find a storage bin that can seal tight and place a desiccant inside. We use broken rice bought at a local market, but silica gel would be ideal.
- Place the sealed filament into the storage bin with the rice and make sure it’s shut tight. Keep out of sunlight and try to get it stored in a relatively cool place.
Storing your filament properly will help to avoid filament degradation that can cause nozzle jams and low quality and weak prints. It’s always a good idea to also use a digital calipre to test the diameter of your filament to ensure it’s consistent. Poor quality filament may have an inconsistent diameter or vary greatly from the advertised diameter. Filament damaged by humidity may also have an inconsistent diameter so it’s one way to check.
